bristol blue glass

Salvaged broken window panes from Madehurst Lodge stables, a splendid Grade II listed Georgian house of grand proportions, located in the village of Madehurst on the southern slopes of the South Downs National Park - England. Believed to have been built in the 1770s. - Presently being converted to one of the "Pig" chain hotels where I worked for 14 months.

The glass flowers are fused and slumped in a homemade African kiln - during the heating process I manipulate the glass further to achieve these unique shapes and differing intensities of colour - it’s taken years to master.

conceptualization

We designed and made similar wrought-iron Chandeliers and Lamps in South Africa 1992 - 2005
This is a first for us- Branches and leaves made from Copper, aged to natural Verdigris
Metal and Brass
Flower Lamp holders coated with Moroccan Pewter
Glass
from the 1700’s

All fixings and details - Copper Wire

Most materials are timeously salvaged from demolished buildings, then recycled from , windows and doors,
floor boards, roof trusses, old electrical wire, air conditioners and geysers.

We previously, and most makers of Luminaires position the light source within a ‘ shade ‘, be it made of glass or a type of fabric.

Skye’s light source is external and of the spotlight type - capsules can also be used .

Hence the light shines through, and reflects off the glass

Skye offers 16 x glass shapes to view.
Focusing on only one as an example, walking past / under the chandelier - the glass and light source line of view alter continually as one moves, ( it’s not stagnant ) it’s alive
The glass colour will also change as one continues to move ones viewing angle - from sharp whites, lighter blues, aquas,
to deep intense Cobalt blues - irrespective of the colour, even natural glass ….this effect exists.

It captures attention, is effective, interesting, filled with hues and tones, the combination of copper, touches of natural verdigris, pewter, coloured glass are emotionally reflective….then one adjusts the dimmer to suit the required ambiance….Havanas, Rioja, a whiter shade of pale.

Interestingly Crystal Chandeliers were initially positioned in natural sunlight, a similar effect was achieved due to the Earths rotation.

This is what makes Skye - besides the craftmanship and creativity - unique.

One can also position the glass elements to personal choice, and slightly twist / alter light sources.
Even replace the glass elements from our future ranges to be made shortly.
Warm colours for winter, Cooler ones for Summer.
Clear glass, naturally Aquas - absolutely stunningly fresh in sea-side settings……………….I know!
( I assisted building several upmarket holiday homes for international clients when living in the coastal village / town of Knysna - Garden Route- Cape Province - South Africa. )

“ a work of art “

As a 15 year-old scholar, I chose art while my mates did woodwork - yes, I followed the sissy girls and ladies, though I played first team rugby, repaired and road motorcycles with the best of the boys.
I followed all my passions….ART and the creative lifestyle was centered from an early age.

I thoroughly enjoyed making ‘Skye’
Hitting the sack at 2am, then waking at 4am….and continuing.
It was made on the ‘ fly ‘ , no sketches, just vision and feel,
all the stored images were becoming reality - THE BEST

The pics come close…. but not really.

This is the Top Chandelier I have made to date - and I’ve made a few in the past, scattered around the globe today.

After an 8 year sabbatical, not having a workshop, we had ventured to the U.K. as a small family, everything was in storage. I nearly donated the Kiln at one stage to a
Special Needs School.
I have taken the opportunity to pick up the ‘tools’ again,so to speak.

I plan to make different coloured sets of glass to marry the seasons.
Cool colours for the warmer months
Warmer Colours for the cold season
Or a multitude of colour
Going to have some fun for sure
Skye 2, 3, 4……..
and they will always have a touch of AFRICA my birth continent, refined England where we now live, hopefully Spain one fine day.
